Could a common antibiotic boost eczema treatment?
NCT ID NCT07713186
First seen Jul 20, 2026 · Last updated Jul 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial investigates whether adding the antibiotic azithromycin to standard topical creams (betamethasone or tacrolimus) improves eczema symptoms in children aged 3 to 12 with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis. Researchers will measure changes in the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) score over 8 weeks. The goal is to see if the combination works better than creams alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- azithromycin added to betamethasone or tacrolimus ointments
- What this could lead to
- If adding azithromycin works, it could offer a simple, low-cost way to boost the effectiveness of standard eczema creams.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 40 children, so results may not apply broadly. Azithromycin can cause side effects like stomach upset or allergic reactions.
