New fistula technique may boost dialysis success for kidney patients

NCT ID NCT06997042

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This study compares two surgical techniques for creating arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) needed for hemodialysis in people with advanced chronic kidney disease. The standard end-to-side method is being tested against a newer piggyback technique that may reduce complications like narrowing or clotting. About 130 adults who need a new AVF will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures and followed for 12 months to see which technique leads to better fistula maturation and usability for dialysis.
