Can a simple chemical be the key to surviving an avalanche?

NCT ID NCT06895759

Summary

This study tested if a chemical called soda lime could help people survive longer if trapped in an avalanche. When buried, victims breathe into a small air pocket, but their own exhaled carbon dioxide quickly builds up and becomes deadly. Researchers had 22 healthy volunteers breathe into a simulated snow air pocket, once with soda lime to absorb the carbon dioxide and once without, to see if it improved their breathing and blood oxygen levels.
