Could augmented reality replace painful breast cancer surgery guides?
NCT ID NCT06512558
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether augmented reality (AR) can help surgeons locate non-palpable breast tumors during surgery, replacing the current method that uses a metal wire inserted under local anesthesia. Twenty women with early breast cancer will receive an extra MRI and 3D camera imaging to create a virtual overlay of the tumor. The goal is to see if this AR system is feasible and can reduce pain and the need for repeat surgeries.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Augmented reality system using MRI and 3D camera imaging
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a less painful and more accurate way to guide breast cancer surgery, reducing the need for repeat operations.
What could go wrong
This is a very early feasibility study with only 20 participants. The technology is a prototype and may not work as intended in real surgery.
