Could 3D holograms replace painful needles in breast cancer surgery?

NCT ID NCT06512558

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 33 times

Summary

This study tests whether augmented reality (AR) can help surgeons locate small breast tumors that can't be felt. Normally, doctors insert a metal wire into the breast before surgery, which can be painful and sometimes leads to repeat operations. The AR system creates a 3D overlay of the tumor on the patient's body using MRI scans and a camera, so surgeons can see exactly where to cut. The trial involves 20 women with early-stage breast cancer to see if the AR method is practical and doesn't lengthen surgery time.
