Brainstem implant gives hearing hope to children with no inner ear

NCT ID NCT02102256

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 05, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study tested a special hearing device called an auditory brainstem implant in 10 children aged 2-5 who are profoundly deaf due to missing or damaged inner ear parts. The implant sends sound signals directly to the brainstem, bypassing the ear. The goal was to see if the surgery is safe and if the device helps children detect sounds that could lead to speech understanding.
