New drug trial aims to delay heart valve surgery

Summary

This study is testing whether an experimental drug called ataciguat can slow down the progression of moderate aortic valve stenosis, a condition where the heart's main valve narrows and stiffens. Researchers will enroll about 1,276 adults aged 50+ to receive either ataciguat or a placebo for up to 48 weeks. The study measures whether the drug reduces calcium buildup on the valve, preserves valve opening size, and improves exercise capacity.
