New Immune-Targeting drug could boost stomach cancer treatment
NCT ID NCT07673887
First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This phase 3 trial tests whether adding the experimental drug ASP2138 to standard chemotherapy and immunotherapy (pembrolizumab) helps people with a specific type of advanced stomach or gastroesophageal junction cancer live longer without their disease worsening. The study enrolls adults whose tumors are HER2-negative and have a protein called CLDN18.2. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either ASP2138 plus standard treatment or a placebo plus standard treatment, and neither they nor their doctors know which group they are in.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- ASP2138 (a bispecific antibody that binds to CLDN18.2 on tumor cells and T cells, helping the immune system attack the cancer)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this combination could offer a new first-line treatment option for people with a specific type of stomach cancer that currently has limited targeted therapies.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-phase 3 trial, and the added benefit of ASP2138 over standard care is not yet proven. There may be side effects from the combination therapy, including immune-related reactions.
