New landmark could make spinal anesthesia safer

NCT ID NCT07396961

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a line drawn between the hip bones (ASIS line) is more reliable than the usual method (Tuffier's line) for finding the correct spot on the lower back for spinal anesthesia. Researchers will mark both lines on 140 adults and use ultrasound to see which line hits the right vertebra more consistently. The goal is to improve accuracy and safety during spinal anesthesia procedures.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If the ASIS line proves more consistent, it could give doctors a better way to locate the correct spot for spinal anesthesia, potentially reducing complications.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 140 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and the ASIS line might not be more accurate than the current method.
