Scientists probe aorta for oxygen clues

NCT ID NCT03410420

Summary

This small, early-stage study aimed to see if a safe chemical probe could detect areas of low oxygen in the tissue of a dangerous heart artery bulge called an aortic aneurysm. Nine patients scheduled for surgery to repair this condition took a single oral dose of the probe 24 hours before their operation. Researchers then analyzed the removed tissue to see if the probe highlighted low-oxygen areas, hoping to better understand what causes these aneurysms to form.
