Antibiotics may temporarily wipe out gut nerve cells, small study suggests
NCT ID NCT05834036
First seen Mar 16, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
This study looked at how a single course of antibiotics changes the nerve and support cells in the lower gut of healthy adults. Ten participants provided colon tissue samples before and after taking antibiotics. The goal was to see if the loss of gut bacteria caused by antibiotics leads to a drop in nerve cell numbers, which might help explain digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome.
