New study aims to slash antibiotic overuse for coughs and colds

NCT ID NCT07359287

First seen Jan 31, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tests whether a two-part program can help doctors and pharmacists work together to reduce antibiotic use for respiratory infections like bronchitis, sinusitis, and sore throat. About 4,500 patients will take part. The program includes a tool to show when infections are likely viral (so antibiotics won't help) and a pharmacist check to ensure any prescribed antibiotics are taken for the shortest safe duration.
