First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study looked at 119 patients who had colon or rectal cancer surgery in Damascus, Syria. Researchers found that low protein levels in the blood raised the risk of a serious leak where the intestine was reconnected. After updating hospital guidelines to fix this and improve care before and during surgery, the leak rate and deaths dropped. The study shows that simple, low-cost changes can save lives even in difficult settings.
