Pill vs. IV: could a new drug beat the standard for deadly lung fungus?
NCT ID NCT05468372
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether the antifungal drug posaconazole (taken as a pill) works as well as the standard IV drug amphotericin B for treating a serious lung infection called pulmonary mucormycosis. The trial involved 82 adults with this rare but deadly infection. Researchers compared how many patients improved after six weeks of treatment with either drug.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Posaconazole (an antifungal drug) compared to amphotericin B (standard antifungal)
What this could lead to
If posaconazole works as well as amphotericin B, it could offer a safer, pill-based treatment for this serious lung infection, avoiding the need for IV therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, phase 2 trial with only 82 participants. Posaconazole may not be as effective as the standard treatment, and the results may not apply to all patients.
