Shorter antibiotic course for lyme rash put to the test

NCT ID NCT03966014

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two treatment plans for people with erythema migrans, the classic Lyme disease rash. One group takes amoxicillin for 10 days, another for 14 days, and a third group gets no treatment. The goal is to see if a shorter course works just as well at preventing later symptoms. About 200 adults with the rash are being enrolled.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

amoxicillin

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that a shorter course of amoxicillin is just as effective as a longer one for treating early Lyme disease.

What could go wrong

This is a moderate-sized trial, and the results may not apply to people with more advanced Lyme disease or other health conditions. Some patients may still have lingering symptoms.
