First seen Feb 06, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study looked at whether alpha lipoic acid, a natural antioxidant, can prevent tissue damage when blood flow returns after a prolonged, painful erection (priapism) in rats. Researchers divided 18 rats into groups and measured various markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in the blood and penile tissue. The goal was to see if this antioxidant could protect against the damage caused by the return of blood flow.
