Can a simple blood test make a common treatment work better for liver disease?

NCT ID NCT05056220

First seen Feb 03, 2026 · Last updated May 05, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study tests whether a blood test can predict which patients with advanced liver disease (cirrhosis) and fluid buildup (ascites) will benefit from regular infusions of human albumin, a protein that helps maintain fluid balance. About 240 adults will receive either albumin or a placebo (salt water) every 10 days for 6 months. The goal is to see if the biomarker-guided approach reduces serious liver-related events like bleeding, infections, and kidney injury.
