Which numbing method works best for awake intubation?

NCT ID NCT07627100

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two ways to numb the airway before placing a breathing tube while the patient is awake: a nerve block injection versus lidocaine mist. Eighty adults with difficult airways will be randomly assigned to one method. The goal is to see which technique keeps heart rate and blood pressure more stable and improves patient comfort during the procedure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

lidocaine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a better way to keep patients stable and comfortable during awake intubation.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both methods use lidocaine, which can cause side effects like allergic reactions or toxicity.
