Ventilator mystery: how often do airways close in ICU?
NCT ID NCT07368491
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study aims to find out how common airway closure is in adults who are on a breathing machine (ventilator) in the intensive care unit. Researchers will check 75 patients within 48 to 72 hours after they are put on a ventilator, using a special breathing test to detect closure. The goal is to describe the prevalence and identify any patient traits linked to it.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors better understand and manage airway closure in ventilated ICU patients, potentially improving care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, observational study with only 75 participants, so findings may not apply to all ICU patients. It does not test a treatment.
