AI vs. doctors: who reads brain data better in spine surgery?
NCT ID NCT07650604
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will test whether artificial intelligence programs like ChatGPT can interpret brain monitoring data (BIS) as accurately as experienced clinicians during spine surgery. Researchers will compare AI responses to those of two doctors in 63 patients. The goal is to see if AI can reliably support clinical decisions in the operating room.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Artificial intelligence programs (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that AI can reliably assist in monitoring brain activity during surgery, potentially supporting clinical decision-making.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage methodological study, not a treatment trial. AI interpretations may not match real-world clinical judgment, and results may not apply to other surgeries or settings.
