AI takes on root canals: can it beat the scan?

NCT ID NCT07319221

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether artificial intelligence (AI) can accurately count the number of root canals in lower second molars, compared to standard CBCT scans. Forty patients needing root canal treatment participated. The goal is to see if AI can help dentists avoid missing canals during treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Artificial intelligence software

What this could lead to

If successful, AI could help dentists find all root canals more easily during root canal treatment, reducing missed canals.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 40 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. AI might not be as accurate as CBCT in all cases.
