AI outsmarts hidden jaw nerve, could prevent dental surgery mishaps

NCT ID NCT07114484

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested an artificial intelligence (AI) model to see how well it can find a rare nerve variation in the jaw called a bifid mandibular canal on dental CT scans. Researchers used 117 existing scans from Egyptian patients aged 15 and older. The goal was to see if the AI could match expert dentists in spotting this variation, which if missed during surgery could lead to nerve damage.
