Sham-Controlled trial to reveal true benefit of heart shock procedure

NCT ID NCT05136131

First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated May 04, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study aims to find out if a procedure called cardioversion, which uses a mild electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm, truly improves quality of life in people with persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat). About 100 adults with this condition will be randomly assigned to receive either the real procedure or a sham (fake) version. Neither the patients nor their doctors will know which they received. The main goal is to measure changes in quality of life using a standard survey, helping doctors decide if the procedure is worth the effort and cost.
