Could a cheap heart drug prevent 'No-Reflow' during heart attack treatment?

NCT ID NCT07536802

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether giving the drug adenosine just before emergency angioplasty (PCI) can improve blood flow in heart attack patients. About 1,148 adults having a severe type of heart attack (STEMI) will either receive adenosine or standard care. The goal is to see if adenosine reduces the 'no-reflow' problem, where blood still doesn't flow well even after opening the blocked artery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

adenosine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple pre-treatment to reduce heart muscle damage during emergency angioplasty for heart attacks.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial, so results may not apply everywhere. Adenosine can cause temporary heart block or low blood pressure, and the benefit over standard care is unproven.
