ACL surgery recovery: new study tracks how the brain rewires balance

NCT ID NCT07389850

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study follows 34 athletes aged 15 to 40 who are having ACL reconstruction surgery. Researchers will test their balance before surgery and again 3 and 9 months after, using a force platform and vibrations to see how the body re-learns to use sensory information. The goal is to understand how proprioceptive reweighting (the brain's ability to adjust balance signals) improves over time, which could lead to better rehab programs.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help design better rehabilitation programs to improve return-to-sport rates after ACL surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study (34 people) that only measures balance, not treatment outcomes. Results may not apply to all athletes.
