Summary
This large European study tested if giving acetaminophen (like Tylenol) as a preventive treatment in the first five days of life could help close a persistent blood vessel near the heart in extremely premature infants. The goal was to see if this early treatment could increase the number of babies who survive to 36 weeks without severe lung, brain, or gut problems. Researchers tested different doses and compared the drug to a placebo in over 800 babies born between 23 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.
