New dissolving stent could offer hope for chronic watery eyes

NCT ID NCT07499791

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a new absorbable stent that releases medication to keep the tear duct open after surgery for recurrent chronic dacryocystitis (blocked tear ducts). Forty adults who have had a previous failed surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the new stent or standard packing with a nasal spray. The goal is to see if the stent improves symptoms and keeps the duct open better than current methods.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Absorbable lacrimal sac drug-eluting stent (coated with mometasone furoate)

What this could lead to

If successful, this stent could offer a better way to treat recurrent blocked tear ducts, reducing the need for repeat surgeries.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 40 participants. The stent may not work better than standard care, and risks include allergy to the drug or material, or the stent not dissolving properly.
