New pill aims to tame genital herpes outbreaks
NCT ID NCT06698575
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early study tests an experimental drug called ABI-1179 in healthy volunteers and people with recurrent genital herpes caused by HSV-2. The main goal is to check safety and how the body processes the drug. Researchers will give single or multiple doses and monitor for side effects. This is a first step to see if the drug is safe enough for larger trials.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ABI-1179 (an experimental antiviral drug taken as a tablet)
What this could lead to
If this early study shows the drug is safe and well-tolerated, it could pave the way for a new treatment option to reduce herpes outbreaks.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 trial focused on safety and dosing, not on whether the drug actually works. Many drugs fail in later stages, so there is no guarantee this will become a treatment.
