3D-Printed retainers could be a Game-Changer for orthodontic stability

NCT ID NCT07659041

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two types of retainers used after orthodontic treatment that widens the upper jaw: a traditional Hawley retainer and a newer 3D-printed retainer. The goal is to see which one better prevents teeth from shifting back, is more comfortable for patients, and costs less. The trial involves 28 people aged 16 and older who have had their upper arch expanded. Researchers will measure changes in tooth width and ask participants about their experience over 12 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

3D-printed retainer (Nextdent Orthoflex resin) and Hawley retainer

What this could lead to

If 3D-printed retainers work as well or better than Hawley retainers, they could offer a more comfortable, cheaper, and more durable option for keeping teeth aligned after orthodontic treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 28 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. 3D-printed retainers are new, and long-term performance is not yet proven.
